CULTES DES GHOULES - Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of Love

Cultes Des Ghoules - Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of Love

Ok, so, confession time. Up until a couple of months ago, I had totally ignored Cultes Des Ghoules, due to a bigoted attitude to black metal, but boy how I would have kicked myself if I had missed out on a piece of music that would have been my top album of 2016 if I hadn't been so bigoted about black metal.

'Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of love' is a lycanthropic symphony for the disturbed, the cold caress from the talon of the withered old crone, before suddenly shrieking like a banshee cursing you to hell. With this album, Cultes Des Ghoules, has purveyed a sense of unease. It's like meeting the stare of a psychopath and realising that there really is nothing in the eyes except bad intentions.

At 100 minutes long, there or there about, 'Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of Love' is a monster of an album that demands you listen to it in its entirety in one sitting so as to become enthralled by this ceremony of the damned. There is a conceptual flow to this album that reminds me of Sabbat's  'Dreamweaver'  but not so much a story, rather a perpetual nightmare, an adorcism for spectral beings that dwell in the darkest of shadows.

With each track a sacrament to the sickness that pervades in the very best underground metal genres, be it the poltergeist mischief of black metal, or the dank oppression of doom / death,Coven, or Evil Ways Instead of Love, should lie, buried in unconsecrated ground, a driven stake splitting its black heart.
